Lymph Node Biopsy
A lymph node biopsy removes all or part of a lymph node so it can be examined under a microscope, for example to look for infection or cancer.
Types of lymph node biopsy
- Open biopsy: through a small incision, often for a node that can be felt on exam, with local numbing medicine or general anesthesia.
- Laparoscopic biopsy: for lymph nodes inside the abdomen, using a camera through small incisions.
- Sentinel lymph node biopsy: for some cancers, a tracer is used to find the first node(s) the cancer would reach; those nodes are removed and checked. See breast surgery.
The site may be sore for a few days. Pain is usually mild and controlled with over-the-counter medicine. Dr. Brown will review the pathology results with you.
